Blogging Hiatus
It's the busy season in publishing, and on top of that my wife just gave birth (a boy), so I'm taking a blogging hiatus for a while. I'll be back soon!
Mazel Tov, Jonathan! May your wife recover quickly, may your son be hearty, hale, and a fantastic sleeper, and may you always remember to cover up that little thing between his legs when you change his diaper. Unless, of course, you WANT to see how far it goes...
Just in case your baby develops colic, here is a recipe that might come in handy:
Caraway seed tea works wonders at relieving colic. That's when young babies scream uncontrollably for hours on end because their digestive system spasms for no apparent reason.
You will need fresh caraway seeds (old stuff that's been hanging around for years just doesn't work as well.) Place the seeds in a tea ball and steep in boiling water for about four minutes.
Add about a teaspoon of sugar to the tea so that there's a hint of sweetness for the baby. Put the liquid in a baby bottle and cool down to warm by placing in a bowl of ice water. Test the temperature on the back of your hand.
Feed the tea to your baby and feel your nerves begin to settle as your baby quiets down.
Enjoy the upcoming holiday seasons with your blessed little one.
Oh, I'm very happy for you both! (I met you at a conference in PA a year ago, and you mentioned your wife tenderly, which I liked.) Congratulations!
About the colic thing--if your wife is nursing, and he is colicky, try having her eliminate dairy from her diet. It was like night and day for my son, unbelievable.
And try to get some sleep. :) Hope to read more from you next year.
And about colic - both of my baby girls had colic - and I did the walking in the middle of the night, and the driving all over hell's half acre in the middle of the night because they slept with movement, etc.
But - then - my cousin and his wife had a baby about 10 years later (she's 10 now) - and there's a device you can buy and attach to the cradle that simulates driving movement. I bought it for them - it worked really well. Just so you know it's out there if you need it.

Woo hoo! Mazel Tov!
My experiences as a parent of very young children lead me to . . . not offer a single word of advice at this juncture. Just: congratulations!
Congratulations! May he never get colic, may he share at least one of your passions, and may he never deck you with a tee-ball when he gets older.
Congratulations! Enjoy your bundle of joy, let your wife get some sleep, and take lots of pictures to remember Baby Boy when he was small. :o)

Just dropped back by to see a baby pic.
